Tailgating Isn't Just For Rednecks

I have never been the sporty type. I have never been the country type either. I was raised in the South and it is a part of who I am, but I have never have let that define who I am. There is a stereotype that only rednecks tailgate, but I am by no means a redneck and I love to tailgate. Let's see why that is.

Once I moved down to South Carolina I saw it was odd if your family didn't choose which college football team they supported and it had to be between the USC Gamecocks or the Clemson Tigers. (We obviously chose the superior team, the USC Gamecocks. GO COCKS!)

People acted as if these football games were crucial to their being able to live. At first, I just didn't get it, but then it all made sense once I got to experience my first real college football game. You walk by this enormous stadium and see it literally sparkling in the light. The hot Columbia sun was beaming down on my sweaty face, but I didn't care because I was so excited to be experiencing something new.

Once we got to our tailgating site I was surrounded by all types of delicious food and smiling faces. After I ate we played a bean bag toss game and just socialized. It felt as if I was a part of some family that I just met that day.

We finally got into the stadium after having to go through security and we found our seats that made it feel like we are on the field with the football players. There are people blaring over the speakers to pump you up. All around you thousands of people are yelling "U.S.C GOOOO COCKS" right before the bum bum bum bummm of the band.

Or they will play the electronic dance song known as "Sand Storm" and everyone takes out their tiny hand towels, they are given out for free in the stadium, and wave them around their head as fast as they can while jumping to the beat of the song.

There is this big rush of adrenaline as the smoke comes out of the tunnel and the football players coming running out to a song that beats inside your chest. The giant red bird, Cocky their mascot, comes on the scene and they drop this curtain and he appears and the crowd goes wild. Then the game starts with a kick and everyone is cheering on their team.

These moments created a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget. I am so glad I was introduced to this because I now know what all the hype is about. I wanted to write this because I wanted to show other people like me that football isn't just for the sporty type, but it can be fun for everyone. Try something new because you never know, you just might like it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
