Stop Belittling Other College Majors Because You Think Yours Is Harder
Everyone's college aspirations are valid, even if they aren't a STEM major.
This is most specifically aimed at STEM majors, because they tend to be the worst offenders when it comes to this topic.
There are so many different majors to choose from when you embark on your college journey. Every school has a different array of subjects, but there are some popular majors that are largely uniform across all schools.
You have your STEM majors, like the nurses, pre-med/pre-dent, bio and chem, mathematics, engineering, and computer science. You have your business school kids: the accountants (me!), the finance majors, management, business admin, economics, and marketing. You have mass communications, English, psychology, and education majors. You have art majors and music majors. And this list doesn't even scratch the surface of every major colleges offer.
There are generally the same groups of students at each school, and the same recurring theme: people from different majors look down on others because they don't think of their majors as "useful" as their own are.
I'm here to tell you that every major and every career is valuable in a different way.
STEM majors are notorious for looking down their noses at every other major. Just because you're a future doctor or future engineer, you are not superior to your peers in different majors.
Are doctors and engineers valuable to society? Yes, absolutely! I'm thrilled that you're taking on the task of becoming a surgeon so I don't have to.
However, STEM majors can't run the world on their own. No one major can.
Where would doctors be without the ethics committee, many of whom majored in social sciences? Where would our economy be without the accountants and the finance majors? How colorless would our world be without those who choose to do art, even though they're told constantly they'll never succeed? Where would anyone be without the education majors who become the teachers we all rely on for educating our kids and ourselves?
Stop putting others down for their career choices and realize that without THEIR career, YOURS wouldn't exist, either.
We're all just struggling college kids who are trying to survive college. Many students are already facing pressure from family to change to something more "valuable." They don't need your negativity and judgment.
Why can't we all just get along and cry during finals week together instead of arguing over who has it harder?
