Exclusive Interview: Robin M. Talks ‘Choosy,’ Inspiration, And More
You read it here first.
Robin M, a London based DJ and producer, has officially given you the right to be choosy, and let me be the first to tell you that choice should be listening to his new single 'Choosy' that released on August 15th featuring Dantae The Kid. I'm not going to lie, I have caught myself dancing in my bedroom to his new tune more times than I would like to admit ever since I found out I was going to get to talk to him about it.
But enough about me. Let's talk about Robin M.
Robin M has been into music ever since he was a child, but decided to pursue it as a career only two years ago when he started his first record with CLiQ, and has always had a solo project on the mind. When it comes to his solo work, it's definitely more afro leaning with percussive drums, as opposed to the chunky house feel of CLiQ. Both of these music outlets work side by side together to express everything he loves, encompassing his whole taste in music.
His latest single 'Choosy' was birthed out of working with lots of friends who also work in the music industry. The best part (in my opinion) was that the song wasn't even planned. Sometimes the best things in life take us by surprise. Having a very fun and organic time, they all sat down together and just let it all happen.
It wasn't "we have to do this,"they just laid down some drums and the vibe came together. One of his old friends Mike Hamilton had the concept "she's got the right to be choosy" and the rest is history. The baseline accentuates Dantae's vocals beautifully, and there are lots of club remixes coming in the future to contrast its original afro house sound. Hopefully it's a song we will all hear in clubs starting in Ibiza and ending all around the world.

As far as his specific sound goes, you can probably tell already that it seems to be split (afro vs. house). Having a solo project in addition to CLiQ allows him to maintain both. This single is more of a commercial hit with afro flavor in the drums. He is diving in deep in the afro club world and I really hope this leads to him being well known for the unique sound he brings to the table.
I asked Robin M to describe his music in only one word, and that word of choice for him is cool (how else are you supposed to describe yourself on the internet?). He then asked for two so I allowed it… Interviews are give and take, right? The two words he has decided to bestow upon his sound is 'cool house,' I think I can get on board with that.
Robin M's inspiration is definitely genre driven, I could tell that after only talking with him for a few minutes! He is passionate about the afro tech world as well as the UK bass house world. One person specifically who inspires him is Stevie Wonder. He's always looking for a good song within a record. Aren't we all??
As one would guess, the easiest part of being in the music world according to Robin M is having fun! For him, making music is all about enjoying the process, recording, and keeping it light and positive. When you overthink making a record, that's when they don't come out the way you want them to.
Something that always intrigues me when I talk to artists is what exactly does their specific process look like? How are they collabing and making music? So of course I asked Robin M about this for him personally. He tries to bring the vibe into the room through processes he's familiar with, and not put too much pressure on the person he's bringing into the studio and working with.
You have to make it a fun session. There's got to be icebreakers and a way to relax, keeping it light can open a lot of room for both production and post production. Robin M is constantly listening to records to get inspired, and I think that speaks highly of him as well as the power of music.
Robin M's main goal for everything he creates is to get it to the finish line, to see it through. You have to be satisfied with your end product and its quality. If he as an artist can create self satisfaction, the record label can do the rest.
If you've made it this far into the article, you're in luck because I have the information you've all been waiting for… will there be a tour?? Yes! What amazing artist doesn't want to go on tour? Robin would love to tour from a DJing perspective, getting out and playing his music as well as other musician's records. He wants to be a DJ first and a producer second - mainly he just has the desire to get on the road and play music (yay)!

Robin M is dedicated to his craft. That's what makes him stand out and soar. He is always listening to music and getting inspired, going to clubs and listening to DJs, and being inspired by his friends in music, all of which allow him to go into the studio with a fresh pallet of things he's listened to before. This creates space for proper feedback and opportunity for growth, which ultimately leads to flourishing success. This process drives him. He loves being creative, all the way from music to drawing.
Robin's advice to those trying to get into the music industry would be to truly hone in on your skills, a specific instrument/talent, then start networking and building a good team. Stay true to what you like and want to do, not what other people want you to do or think you should do.
He is so grateful people are responding to the music he has put out into the world and is excited to get on the road and start DJing as Robin M!
