If you’ve watched the news in the last few weeks or even took a scroll down your Facebook timeline there's a good chance that you’ve seen something about the Syrian Civil War. Recently, on April 7 a chemical attack occurred in a suburb of Damascus. Assad is being labeled as the sole perpetrator of this attack by most western media and politics. Not everyone is so convinced of this. What we forget to realize or have seem to forgotten is that Assad has been accused of using chemical weapons before. On August 21, 2013 the Syrian government had been accused of using chemical weapons which was again, located in a suburb of Damascus.
Syria has been in a brutal civil war since March 2011. This means that the country has been at war for eight years. The war started during the time of the Arab Spring while they watched neighboring countries topple their governments and attempt to implement their own democracy. Defectors from the Syrian army rose up, called themselves The Free Syrian Army and they’ve been at war against the Assad regime ever since. That’s Plus or Minus a few different groups mixed in, this includes Iran, Hezbollah, Turkey and Jordan who are also involved and fighting here. While Iran and Hezbollah side with Assad. Jordan and Turkey side with the rebels. There are also terrorist organizations in the country fighting for control. In Syria the United States and Russia are also heavily involved, though they are on different sides. The United States is against the rule of Assad, while Russia supports his regime.
While United States involvement in the war started almost as soon as it had begun. In May of 2011 the United States hadalready placed sanctions on the country. By 2014 the United States and Russia had made an agreement to clean up and remove all chemical weapons that remained in Syria. Syria has been a site of disagreement and turmoil for many countries. On April 13, 2018 Trump and forces from Britain and France struck Syria with a bomb on what was believed to be chemical facilities. This has sparked new tensions with Russia, as Russia is pro-Assad. While the United States is blaming Assad for the chemical attacks. Russia is claiming they never took place. According to CNN, "Alexander Shulgin of the Russian Organization for the prohibition of chemical weaponsareclaiming that the chemical attack was staged by the White Helmets, using the United States funding of the group as a motive. "
The United States and Russia have strong views on the chemical attacks in Damascus. Russia believes that there was no chemical attack. While the United States says there was traces of the use of chemical warfare. The United States government is now accusing Russia that is attempting to cover up evidence of the chemical attack since so much time had passed. It is said that Russian and Syrian forces denied access to the site to the team sent that was sent to investigate the use of Chemical warfare by the United Nations.
While tensions are and have been high in Syria for the last few years they only seem to be getting worse. The Pro-Assad and Anti-Assad rhetoric is causing tensions between the United States and Russia. The United States has even mentioned putting more sanctions against Russia, due to their stance in Syria. The war in Syria should be for the people of Syria to fight alone, this is without any outside forces trying to intervene for their personal gain. If the United States continues to be involved it will only further damaged our relations with Russia and other countries, such as Iran. The United States is not the military police of the world and should not be inclined or allowed to act as such. The United States has had a long history of imperialistic behaviors and ideals. Syria to the United States is just starting to look like another one of the pawns on the board. Though Syria is not a game for Russia and The United States to play with. This is a real country that this conflict is in, that has real people, that are experiencing real death and atrocities. When speaking of Syria, we must realize that we could one day be in the same circumstances of its people.
