6 Ways You'll Need To Remember To Survive Syllabus Week
Business Insider

Kicking off syllabus week sets the tone for your semester. This is the single most socially acceptable time to go out every night for a week straight celebrating newly replenished bank accounts, the reunion of school friends, and stress-free living. The bold souls that make it out of this jam-packed week live to share the unforgettable memories. So, how exactly do you mentally and physically make it to week two (for TAILGATE SZN) unscathed?

1. Work hard, play hard

You learn pretty quickly that if you want to go out every night, you better be in the library during the day. Syllabus week, while easy and seemingly unimportant, is actually really important. Some people might tell you to miss all your classes, but this is a terrible mistake that I've seen too many people make. Firstly, this is when your teacher is learning names, and when you need that final grade curve, it's helpful to be more than just a name on the attendance sheet. Additionally, this is when the teacher highlights important features in the class, like dropping your lowest test grade. Some teachers start teaching on the first day. It's easy to just show up to prevent any mishaps, even though the ice breakers are painfully uncomfortable.

2. Order your books immediately

DO NOT GO TO THE BOOKSTORE! Unless it is absolutely necessary, pay a third of the prices by renting and buying used textbooks through Amazon and Chegg. The worst thing you can do is hold off on ordering your textbooks. Avoid ordering books before attending the class because a lot of teachers tell you whether or not it is necessary for the course.

3. Say YES to everything!

When the semester is in full swing, there's too much going on to even consider going out sometimes. Use syllabus week to your full advantage because there will never be another time for you to go out this stress-free. It is a terrible truth, but it is better to realize before you miss out on all the fun.

4. Go to the pregame

While syllabus week sets the tone for the semester, the pregame sets the tone for the night. Whether you're singing your heart out while applying mascara or playing pong on someone's dining table, most of the fun you have is at the pregame. It's the time to sing along to all of your favorite 90s jams while hyping your best friends up. ALWAYS pregame the pregame!

5. Hydrate all day & eat up

Avoid hangovers at all cost. Your body is comprised mostly of water which alcohol rids your body of. Also, food soaks up alcohol in order to slowly absorb its effects. By doing so, you can pace yourself, stay out, and even remember a thing or two!

6. Resist feeling FOMO

Whether by choice or academic force, it is okay to miss out on a night out. You will thank yourself later in the semester when you're not pulling your hair out late at night in the library, and we are at an age where there are a lot of opportunities to go out. One night won't matter when the rest of your nights are awesome.

DISCLAIMER: If you're a science student, I totally feel you. I've never truly experienced syllabus week in full effect either.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
