Affectionately known to students across the country as "Sylly Week," the first week or so of classes each semester is primarily used to go over all the formalities of a class before the actual learning starts happening. Consequently, there is very little work to be done outside of class.
Most students take advantage of this by doing a whole bunch of stuff they don't usually get to do when the semester actually gets hard. And no one exemplifies the silliness of sylly week better than everyone's favorite sea sponge, so here are some token syllabus week experiences brought to you by the one and only Spongebob Squarepants.
1. Getting to leave class early.
The first week of classes is magical in that it can transform a class that's meant to be two hours long into a half hour of reading over the syllabus and then getting to leave. Amazing.
2. Finding your way to new classes.
A less enjoyable part of syllabus week is remembering where you have to be at what times and how to get there in the first place. Every once in a while someone else will try to ask you for directions which always conveniently happens when you also have no idea where you're going.
3. Having to remember all the stuff that you forgot over the break.
You know all that stuff your brain decided to forget immediately after finishing finals last semester? Yeah, turns out you actually needed that. Oops.
4. Getting freaked out when the teacher starts diving into important concepts on the first day of class.
These professors went to college once, too, right? Surely they must know about the time-honored tradition of not actually doing anything of substance on the first day of class. Unfortunately, not all do and will expect you to be ready to tackle complex concepts from the get-go.
5. Not having any work to do outside of class.
Having little to no actual work to do outside of class is a rare occurrence, so you get to spend the time you'd usually devote to doing homework doing other less torturous things.
6. The Parties.
At a school like mine, there's probably a party every night of the week anyway, but during sylly week there is absolutely no judgment if you decide to go out on a Tuesday night.
7. Trying to get used to waking up at a reasonable hour again.
Arguably one of the tougher parts of syllabus week is just getting back into the habit of waking up before 2 p.m. because you spent your entire break messing up your sleep schedule.
8. Having to spend a ridiculous amount of money on textbooks.
Unfortunately, with syllabi come required texts, and required texts are usually ridiculously expensive. Consider all that money you earned over break gone.
9. You get to go back to living your best college life.
Even though starting new classes can be a pain, it means that you've got a whole semester of new experiences ahead of you to enjoy!
Have an awesome start to your semester, and don't be afraid to get "sylly"!
