How Republican Hypocrisy Silences One of Their Own

Suspended: Tomi Lahren

Last week, Tomi Lahren was suspended from her show, Tomi, on TheBlaze TV for making comments that promoted her pro-choice stance on women's reproductive rights. While I personally find her and her show an abhorrent display of offensive word vomit, I do think it is important to point out a few things. The first of which being that the Republican party prides itself on free speech, yet a very prominent Republican figure is suspended for voicing her opinion. The second: of all of the ridiculous, offensive, and inconsiderate things Tomi Lahren has said in the past, she gets suspended for saying something that isn't really offensive at all.

That said, here are a few things Tomi Lahren has said and has never gotten so much as a slap on the wrist for:

1. "I talk to a lot of Democrats about that. They're like, 'But it's freezing, and then it's hot!' And I'm like, 'Yeah, it's called weather. That's what happens." - In regards to climate change.

2. "Meet the new KKK, they call themselves 'Black Lives Matter' but make no mistake, their goals are far from equality." - In regards to BLM.

3. "I have a feeling an influx of un-vetted refugees from jihadist-ravaged-and-controlled Middle Eastern nations are probably less welcome in the neighborhoods of the rich and famous then they would have us believe by their bleeding-heart award show speeches." - In regards to speeches made by actors and actresses at recent award shows.

4. "Feel free to stay in Iran. I hear it's nice there. Good terror training grounds. Foreign film translation: Iranian filmmakers don't like new POTUS because they're used to former POTUS kissing their behinds." - In regards to a speech made at the Oscars by Asghar Farhadi, Best Foreign Language Film winner.

5. “Americans stand up and fight for faith, family, and freedom. Syrians run away.” - In regards to Syrian refugees.

6. “If this country is so oppressive for black people, tell me where else you’d like to live." - In regards to Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the National Anthem.

7. “I don’t know about a day without women, but I could use a day without this nasty feminist b.s. masqueraded as women’s rights,” - In regards to feminism and the Day Without Women.

Now to the point. Tomi Lahren has been suspended from her show for saying this:

“You know what? I’m for limited government, so stay out of my guns, and you can stay out of my body as well. Listen, I am not glorifying abortion. I don’t personally advocate for it. I just don’t think it’s the government’s place to dictate.”

I disagree with almost everything that spews from Tomi Lahren's mouth. That said, this quote is one of the slim few I can tolerate. I, too, think the government should stay out of women's reproductive rights. It is not the job of the American government to control and dictate every single thing we are allowed to do in this country; that is what dictatorships are for. Limited government is what allows a country to be by the people and for the people, and that is something I can get behind in most cases.

Not only did she throw in the common conservative "leave my guns alone" stance, she also pointed about that she doesn't personally advocate for abortion. Yet, she is still suspended. This woman, championed by conservative Republicans who want unlimited free speech, has been censored by those same Republicans because they don't like what she said. The conservative right claims that Democrats, Liberals, and "snowflakes" want to take away American freedom of speech, yet the second one of their own voices an opinion slightly different than the popular, they are silenced and shamed.

Hypocrisy, anyone?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
