You’d think that Lubbock wouldn't get snow, if you didn't live here. You’d think that they’d cancel school due the fear of snow.
Well, you thought wrong.
The last week of February was one of the coldest ones this writer has experienced since she moved out here in August of 2013. It rained. It snowed. It even was a nice enough that you didn't have to wear a jacket. Well, that’s Lubbock for you, all four seasons in a week for the price of one. Here’s a recap for those of you are not residing in Lubbock.
Sunday: The First Freeze
I knew it was going to be cold, but I didn't expect it to be so cold that I had to wear two layers of socks when I worked out with Kate that day. Thankfully, we had the gym all to ourselves, but we could still feel the bone chilling wind through the door. If I didn't have such an antipathy towards tanning beds, I would've jumped in the ones at U-Club. Needless to say, this was the first of many cold days ahead.
Monday: The Day Where Mary Beth Didn't Exactly Have Class
As much as every Texas Tech student wanted class to be cancelled, it wasn't. It was delayed until 10 a.m. Dallas/Fort Worth had school cancelled, but apparently in West Texas, a little falling on your ass builds character. So for the ones who had class before 10 a.m. got lucky because they got to sleep in (However, a little bit of me died inside because I had to miss Intro to Ag Education). I didn't go to Stats because I had to deal with the phone company (ugh) and then my Animal Science professor had to deal with some sheep at home (yeah, you read that correctly). Needless to say, there was a nice white blanket of snow on the ground and ice on the roads.
Tuesday: The “Meh” Day
Class wasn't cancelled and it still snowed. It was cold and school should've been delayed. It was basically a repeat of Monday. 'Nuff said.
Wednesday: The Nice Day
Ah yes, one of the warmer days of that week. It was a good day. I had my classes (Intro to Ag Ed just makes my day a little bit sunnier) and had a great day at work. It was a generally nice day. In fact, I actually wore a lighter jacket and didn't feel like my fingers were going to freeze off! I even saw some girls wearing shorts! All in all, it was the perfect day.
Then Thursday happened.
Thursday: The Beginning of the End
Thursday was cold. And when I mean cold, I mean cold. So cold, that I probably shouldn't have worn a dress that day, but I got to talk to my favorite [male] professor during his office hours, so that was a stark plus. However, it cold considerably colder as the day went on. Even my magenta knit beanie couldn't keep me warm as I walked from class to class. It’s the bone chilling cold that gets you every time, especially when you’re not a Lubbock native. Since Lubbock is so dry, the wind is about 20 degrees colder than it would be in Dallas or Houston. So basically you traded humidity for bone-chilling cold winds. As I was walking home from tutoring later that night, I starting thinking that the snow wouldn't stop Tech from having class the next day. Boy, was I wrong.
Friday: The Big Freeze
As much as I thought Tech wasn't going to cancel (or even delay) class, they ended up canceling the whole day. As I snuggled up closer and closer in my sheets and heated blankets (y’all should get one; they’re great), I wondered exactly how bad it was outside. So when I finally awoke from my eternal slumber filled with dreams of horses and cats and attractive young ranch hands, I looked out my window and said, “Holy Bleep! (Although, I didn't exactly say bleep…) There had to be at least four inches on the lounge chairs by the pool at my apartment complex. Thankfully, I didn't have to drive to work, but it was still freaking cold. Even though I don’t have to drive to work, it’s the thought of the young men and women who do have to drive through this god-awful weather to get to work! One of my sister friends works at Starbucks at Covenant and had to drive all the way from Erskine St (which is crummy anyways) to 19th street!
Saturday: The Frozen Wasteland
Since I didn't have to work today (Praise Jesus), I had planned to get my hair done. I made the appointment on Tuesday and didn't think the weather was going to be as bad as it was. Oh, how wrong I was. It was cold and the roads were God awful driving over to the salon. I kid you not; you couldn't even see where the lanes separated because there was so much snow. If I didn't have the driving skills of an Illinois native running through my veins, I would've had a panic attack on the roads (Thanks Dad). However, the roads were still pretty bad.
Thankfully I made it back to my apartment safe, sound and looking fabulous.
So y’all know what I think, but what do other Tech Greeks say about this God awful weather?
Haley Long says, “Why do teachers think that if it’s a snow day, then I’m going to be doing the work that we were supposed to be doing in class?”
Abbeth Lawrence says, “Now I’m a broke, tired and cold college student.”
Shelby Hunt said, "I've forgotten what the outside world looks like. I may never go outside again."
"I thought I was moving to Texas!" Nicole Sprague, a sister of mine from Canada, said.
"I was just constantly worried that I wouldn't have anything to eat!" Says Maria Vargas.
Hopefully, this weather will stop being so temperamental in time for those who are staying for Spring Break.
Or just for this weather to stop. Period.
