Whether you're a freshman who has never experienced the pain or suffering of finals week or a senior in your last semester, finals week is mixed with stress and anxiety. It is the time of the year where computers tend to crash as you're scrambling to send in your essays and final projects at the last moment. It is the time of the year when people tend to fall ill. It is the time of the year when you don't get enough sleep. Here are some tips that will hopefully help you stress less and get more sleep.
1) If you have really been working hard and doing well in your classes, then your final exam or project should be a piece of cake (maybe not that easy, but it shouldn't be overwhelming either). Basically attending your classes, paying attention, and doing your homework will really pay dividends in the end. You won't have to rely on your final exam to receive a passing score.
2) Study days: take advantage of them. Yes it's OK to go out and have a little bit of fun, but make sure you're using your college dead days to actually be productive (aka study!). If you wait until Sunday night to start studying, you're going to probably be pulling an all-nighter. If you do most of your studying during dead days, you don't have to cram as much.
3) Make sure you maintain a healthy diet and workout routine. Please make sure that you're eating plenty of food with high nutritional value and that you're still visiting your college's gym. Working out definitely does wonders, manages your stress levels, and gives you an excuse to take a study break. Don't use food as a coping mechanism for stress.
4) Make sure you take a break. Studying for hours at a time will overwhelm your brain and reduce productivity. There's only so much your brain can absorb at one time. You should study for 20-50 minutes at a time and then take a break for 10. Use your break to walk around, meditate, or squeeze in a short workout.
5) Make sure you're getting plenty of sleep. You should be still trying to get 8 hours of sleep each night. Sleep helps improve your long term memory and boosts your immune system so you're less likely to fall ill. Don't rely on several cups of coffee each day during finals week to stay awake. If you are, you need to hit the hay.
6) Find a quiet place to study. The library is going to be packed. You might not see that as a good place to study. You might not want to study in your dorm room or your dorm in general because it'll probably still be a little loud. There are still going to be plenty of places to study on campus no matter what. Let's be honest: finding a quiet, isolated place to study might be a little difficult during finals week: you could go to a friend's house/apartment off campus and many churches open their doors during dead days and finals week for college students.
7) If you need help, make sure you seek help. Stress during finals week is very real. If you need to talk to someone, many colleges have a counseling center that you can visit. Some colleges even have a hotline you can call 24/7.
