So many of us have divorced parents. Whether it's been 15 years or 15 weeks, the holidays are a very confusing time for split households. Even after my 17 years of having a split family, when January rolls around I'm exhausted from going back and forth and packing bags what seems like every other day. After much practice and strategizing, I've figured out the most efficient ways to tackle the holidays when you have divorced parents, or even just have multiple holiday events to attend in one day, because you're one hot commodity. Here's how to survive the holidays when you have divorced parents.
1. Don't eat too much.
If you're going to multiple parties in one day, don't eat a lot at any of them. Get smaller portions and don't get seconds. If you eat a full meal at your first gathering and have to eat at the next, you will have a full stomach and a bellyache for the next four months.
2. Wear comfortable clothes.
You're going to be juggling family members and parties all day long so wearing heels is a huge no-no. Make sure you're comfortable all day while you're having the same conversation with seven people about your GPA.
3. Create a script.
You will be asked about your grades, your future, and your dating life multiple times over the season, so figure out the perfect sassy response that can be a very passive aggressive way of saying "don't worry about it Aunt Becky".
4. Plan your day.
Figure out which days you're going to go to which event and for how long. This is 10x easier than just winging it and ending up where you end up. You don't want to keep grandma waiting because you couldn't keep track of time!
5. Bake a huge batch of cookies and split them evenly between each gathering as gifts.
If you like to bring snacks or a gift for the hosts, you can without stressing out. Bake one super huge batch of cookies, Oreo balls, or anything else, and take half to one house and half to the other. Everyone will think you are so nice, thoughtful, and such a good baker, when you really just let your pre-cut dough bake in the oven while you watched "The Office".
6. Coffee.
Drink lots and lots of it. You will need it as you brace 10000 relatives in two days.
So, good luck this holiday season and try not to die of exhaustion and a full stomach too early on.
