Geology, one of the most boring subjects ever for some people. However, if you have a good professor, it will be the easiest “A” you can get in college. For some of us like me, Happi, and Elizabeth (check out their articles, they are amazing!) it was not the case, so here are some tips to survive Geology class with a professor who is not like most. The first through fourth one is from Elizabeth, who took the course we had and went through what Happi and I are going through now. The seventh and eighth one comes from my fellow classmate Happi, who is on the struggle bus with me.
1. Do not get the professor mad.
You may think that this type of professor is chill and everything, but they are not. The moment that you are not able to answer the questions they ask or even when hardly anyone turns in their homework, it is over.
Not only do they start yelling at everyone but they also continue to rant about how no one is paying attention to them and how we should be doing better. There was this one time this one professor ranted for over twenty minutes because no one knew the answer to the question he asked. I am a college student, and I would like to learn as much as possible, especially in Geology. Do not do this and you will be fine.
2. Do not be on your phone or sleep during class.
I know most professors do not mind if you are doing one or both of these things but when it came down to my Geology professor, he did not like it. He will call you out in class and start to rant about who knows how long. Do not do what I did. (This is probably why he did not bump my grade up from a C to a B)
3. Pay attention in class.
When I tell you to do this, do it. When it comes to some professor’s lectures, they can be one of those professors who talk during the whole lecture, makes you do an activity, and wraps it up at the end.
They are not the type of professors who have PowerPoint slides with the notes on it. One thing that did help me in Geology was recording my professor’s lectures and writing down the notes of the lecture as I am listening to the recording.
4. Go to their office hours.
5. Have a friend who can make you laugh
6. Create a group chat
Creating a group chat for the class is a good idea so that you can make study groups, get answers quickly and put memes for everyone to see for example this one:
7. Make good use of the required material
We all have those professors that make use get stuff that only they’ve written, and you think it is useless because you can’t find the answers on google. However, the books are useful because remember; your professor is a professor for a reason. They know their stuff, and if they use things that they make for the class, it will most likely be on the exam.
8. STUDY!
By having a good understanding of those expensive textbooks will ensure that you get the grade you want on a test. Make sure that you understand all of the course material before test day and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re struggling. If you don’t have a textbook for your class, review your notes, and, most schools have tutoring sessions that you can go to receive that "A".
9. Relate the topics to things you already know
If you're a History major or any other non-science major, this can be a hard thing to do as geology does relate to much except other science fields. One of the ways you can do relate geology to other things to think a little deeper into common knowledge in YOUR LIFE.
For example, the Lithosphere is the sphere that deals with tectonic plates and physical form around the area. The way I remember it is that my roommate Lindsey loves Georgia Tech, LI in Lindsey= lithosphere, while TECH=tectonic plates.
Overall, Geology is a fun subject if you make it fun and has a professor that encourages it. For those of y'all like us who don't know the subject, follow these instructions and you will be fine.
