DISCLAIMER: I am in no way shape or form 100 percent qualified to talk on the issue of feminism. However, I feel that I am somewhat qualified to put this issue of who needs or does not need feminism to rest. Thank you.
There's been a bit of a stir on the Odyssey lately if you've noticed, surrounding the issue of whether people are feminists or not. Here's my response:
So if you've seen the news lately you'll notice that Piers Morgan had an interview with Donald Trump. In that interview Morgan asked Trump the question of whether he was a feminist or not. His response was roughly, "Uh, no. I support men, I support women, I support everyone." Well guess what? If you support everyone, then SURPRISE! You're a feminist! Yes, Donald Trump (if his answer is truthful) is stating that he is a feminist.
If you support everyone, or support equality for all, then by that fact, you are a feminist.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines 'Feminist' as:
An advocate or supporter of the rights and equality of women.
Beautiful, short, simple and to the point. The thing that most people get hung up on is the difference between radical and classical feminism.
So one of the biggest things that drives people away from using the term "feminism" is the idea that if you say that word, then you have lumped yourself into the group of people who wish to see men killed and women become the oppressors. Here's the thing: a majority of people who claim to be feminists don't want to see men killed or see women oppress men. What most modern day feminists want is what feminism has always stood for. Equality of men and women in society.
For this reason, it baffles my mind when people say they don't need feminism. When I see that, all I think is, "So you're okay with the centuries of oppression and sexism that has run rampant in our country?" Of course no one wants to have that!
Even as a guy, I know that ethically it is right to treat all people with respect and to treat everyone equally, especially when it comes to the work force and equal pay. On top of that, when it comes to women, just like men, they should be able to choose what they want with their life and career.
For a lot of people, they have a desire to be a stay-at-home parent. That's okay. That's amazing! We need more family interaction in this world, where increasingly parents put children in day care for a large chunk of the day.
However, just because you're a feminist doesn't mean that you have to march into the work force and become the CEO everyone thinks you can't be. If you want to be a stay-at-home mom, then be a stay-at-home mom! If you want to be a stay-at-home dad, then by all means, be a stay at home dad.
Here's the thing. Being a feminist doesn't mean you have to abandon all your makeup and everything it means to be a woman. No, and being a male feminist doesn't mean that you have to bow down to women for everything they do (but let's face it, they do some PRETTY amazing stuff).
So in conclusion, if you are arguing for equality among the genders in regards to rights, pay or anything else, then yes – whether you like it or not, you are a feminist. You don't have to be a radical feminist, but wanting equality for all = feminist. Thank you all, and lets work towards a better tomorrow.
