Coming up with a legitimate reason to vote for Donald Trump is hard, as anyone with a shred of political literacy knows by now. Many are resigning themselves to a Trump presidency simply because he's not Hillary Clinton; others claim that even though Trump is a bad politician, he could at least nominate decent justices to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The problem is they have absolutely no reason to believe that he will actually nominate decent justices. Despite what the naive and confused tell you, Trump is not conservative in the least. He has expressed support for single-payer healthcare, public funding for abortion clinics, and higher taxes . He is a protectionist whose trade policies would harm our economy. He is not consistently anti-abortion. He is prejudiced towards women and non-white immigrants. Until this week, he called for a mass deportation of immigrants that would've cost the taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. He was a Democrat for years and donated to liberal politicians. We can safely say that Trump is far to the left, and as president would nominate a far-left justice to the Supreme Court.
Apparently some people think the Supreme Court is the be-all, end-all of politics. True, the Supreme Court of recent decades is much more powerful and active than what Alexander Hamilton described in Federalist 78. But day-to-day governing doesn't happen in the judicial branch. Even if Trump nominated a conservative Supreme Court justice, Trump's own agenda would affect us more than that of his new Supreme Court justice. Not a single one of Trump's policies is good for the United States.
His ideas and actions aren't good for the future of the Republican Party, either. He's already hurting the party's reputation with his extreme rhetoric and downright trashy behavior. It's becoming unlikely that Trump will win. If he does win, he's what most people will think of when thinking of Republican presidents. Is that what we want? Trump could also cost Republicans their seats in Congress and in state and local government. Maybe some Republicans would be willing to sacrifice the rest of the government on the off chance that Trump might nominate a halfway decent Supreme Court justice. I, however, find that logic to be very short-sighted.
Before you ask, "So you think Hillary Clinton could nominate better justices?" let me clarify: I'm not voting for Clinton. I'm going third-party because I refuse support either of the corrupt people in the two major parties. Also, it's true that Clinton's Supreme Court nominees wouldn't be better than Trump's, but they won't be worse, either. Trump and Clinton aren't that ideologically different. Stop letting the R next to Trump's name blind you to reality.
Supreme Court or no Supreme Court, we can't allow Donald Trump to win in November. We can't deny that he would do irreparable harm to the country and the GOP's reputation. Even a decent Supreme Court justice couldn't undo the damage.
