How Supporting Local Artists Helped Me Find My Passion

For the longest time I believed that my passion and my future would be with horses, and that I’d go to school to be a veterinarian. A lot has changed since then; I've come to find my niche, my passion. It started out as innocently finding bands online, or them finding me rather. I started to promote a band that I really liked because they weren't big and I wanted everyone to know about their talent. I'd tweet pictures, videos, and statements about how talented they were musically. After this point small bands and artists were following me left and right, I was clueless to why but at the time i just thought it was a cool thing. I would ask my friend, “Why do all of these artists follow me, I don't get it” and it clicked when she told me that it was obvious that they'd been following me to gain a fan and someone to spread the word of their music. We obviously don't know that for sure, but that seemed to be the reality of it.

All of this seemed as a hobby from my perspective, just finding new music and telling people about it. I was hooked on social media for years doing this: following bands/artists, constantly finding new music, and making connections with musicians. I had gotten to a point where I would go out to shows and listen to their set, and without really trying I’d meet them and form relationships. I never expected that I'd have these opportunities to do things like really get to know local musicians that are trying to make it in the music industry. They would tell me things like how much they appreciated the support and the help to getting where they are, which made me realize that as listeners and parts of the audience that we are such an important part of their career.

It wasn't until my dad had confronted me, asking me if I had ever thought of making a career out of blogging, social media, or anything of that nature. I blew it off at first because i was like “there’s no way that you could get paid to do things like that”- but I was wrong, I was very wrong. I researched different careers such as journalism and social media, journalism because I always had a passion for writing as well- but that branched from early early childhood. I saw that there were jobs in running social media accounts, which shocked me beyond belief. Now I'm thinking to myself how much this job wouldn't feel like work because I enjoy and do this sort of thing already, then I remembered something my dad always told me “ when deciding on your career, you need to chose something that you will be able to want to get up every day for, not a job you’ll dread getting up for every morning." When I reminisce on those words of advice I realized, OK this is definitely the field I want to work in. But you’re probably wondering how this connects to live music. Well, when i had looked into careers in music and social media/ writing I came across the field of public relations.

Public relations is, by definition “the practice of managing the spread of information between an individual or an organization (such as a business, government agency, or a nonprofit organization) and the public.” this interested me because I realized I could become a publicist, someone who represents the public image of a musician. This is something that seems like such a dream job, yet that will be something that I can dive into when I begin my college career. It all started by just loving a band so much, that I wanted to tell the world about. Live music changed my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
