Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to see three amazing local bands here in my hometown of Wichita, Kansas. I listened as The Cavves, Tideway, and Kill Vargas played some indie rock worthy of mainstream indie radio stations.
The tiny venue was packed to the brim with people eager to see these local bands play. For much of the concert, I couldn't even move, due to the sheer number of people filling the small room.
At many points, I couldn't help but think that the venue should have been bigger, or that these bands should be receiving more recognition for their work. Surely if such a large number of people came to see them play at a tiny doughnut shop, more would undoubtedly turn up to watch them in a more well-known spot.
This is where I'm turning to you, the audience.
Everyone loves listening to the music on the radio, but your favorite artists wouldn't be anywhere close to where they are today without the support of an audience. Someone was with them from the start, attending their concerts before they were famous.
All great musicians start out as locals of somewhere. You never know if that person you saw playing in a coffee shop may be the next big thing.
That's why you need to get out there and support your local musicians. You're guaranteed to have a good time, and they'll gain more exposure. It's a win-win.
So next time you're not sure what to do on a Friday night, try checking out the local music scene. I promise you won't be disappointed.
