Supergirl's latest episode was pretty much a big punch in the gut to LGBTQ viewers when the writers ended the only queer relationship on the show.
Up until this heartbreaking episode, Maggie Sawyer and Alex Danvers, also known as Sanvers, were an adorable, badass lesbian couple who fought intergalactic crime together. They were cute and in love and their stories were affirming to many queer ladies.
Only a few episodes before, the two were planning their wedding, which would have been amazing to see, but their relationship quickly ended after having a rather abrupt disagreement about having kids.
I say abrupt because you would think they would have discussed whether or not they wanted to have kids before they got engaged or even before the bridal shower. But no, all of a sudden Alex says she desperately wants to have kids and Maggie has no interest in being a mother, so now Sanvers is no more.
I completely understand that having or not having kids is something both people in the relationship should be on board with, and I understand the importance of that to some people, but I just don't think it was necessarily written and portrayed very well.
It felt rushed and choppy, almost as if they were just trying to get Maggie out of the picture, but I know they're not real people and all couples have disagreements or break up, but I just wanted more for them, given the very little LGBTQ representation we currently have on TV and in movies.
