So...how 'bout them Eagles? For all the Patriots fans out there (which, as far as I know, is Foxborough and like 300 other people scattered across the US,) trust me, I know. It was hard to watch. I promised I would do a postmortem, but to be honest, I didn't think there would be this much "mort" to "em." Let's see what we can do to make heads or tails of this mess...
Winners: Philadelphia Eagles
I honestly have nothing bad to say about the Eagles offense. Nick Foles deserved the Super Bowl MVP he got and more. This might present an issue next season for the Eagles who now have to choose between two start worthy quarterbacks (Carson Wentz is still a fan favorite apparently.) Zach Ertz and Nelson Agholor carried the air game, both clenching several key third-down conversions. Jay Ajayi and Legarrette Blount both tore up the turf.
The only lackluster thing was the defense, but you guys won so everyone has decided to gloss over that part. Now if only your fans would stop destroying Philadelphia, maybe you'd have a town to return to...
Losers: New England Patriots
Make all the jokes you want about Tom Brady, that man was on fire all night long. In fact, he now has the distinction of being able to say that he is the only quarterback in the history of the NFL to throw for more than 500 yards and 3 touchdowns but still lose. I personally pin the blame on the abysmal defense all night long.
3rd-&-12, 3rd-&-6, 4th-&-2, it just didn't seem to matter how far the Eagles were from the first down marker, they almost always had their first down by the end of the play. The inability of the defense to make stops when they needed to was the single largest contributor to the loss the entire game. Sure, there were a few questionable calls on both sides of the ball, but, at the end of the day, the Patriots just couldn't stop the Eagles when it counted and that's that.
To that end, everyone wants to know why Malcolm Butler, Pro-Bowl cornerback, was benched for the entire game when he was badly needed. Even recent news reports haven't been able to confirm any one thing that might point to a reason why he was benched. Apparently, not even Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, knew that Malcolm Butler was going to be benched. I firmly believe that Bill Belichick will be underneath a microscope after this decision.
In other news, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will be staying on with the Patriots for another season instead of becoming head coach for the Colts. Perhaps this means a potential shift in the Patriots coaching staff sometime in the near future? Perhaps a Belichick retirement? Only time will tell.
One thing I can say for certain about any of this is that the Patriots will be looking for vengeance and you can bet your lucky stars that the Patriots will be in the post season hoping to win a Super Bowl next season. The big question is, will the Eagles?
