It's Summer...Now What?

A few suggestions on what to do with the two to three months in between your spring and fall semesters.

Ever since we were children, summer vacation away from school is something to look forward to and to celebrate. The longer days and shorter nights were what we lived (and still live) for. Swimming, playing sports, hanging out with friends, and going on destination vacations sometimes was typical. But, now we're in college. We may not be able to go on as many vacations due to work, summer classes, or lack of funds (#brokecollegestudent). But, there are still several things to do if you haven't considered them already.

1. Watch Netflix

I do this on a regular basis for longer than I care to admit! College students are pros at watching Netflix. There is always something to watch from "Gossip Girl" to Disney movies from our childhood. Shout out to Netflix for getting that deal with Disney. I'm sure they will get an increased subscriber count from this deal. This may or may not cause a dramatic increase in the amount of time I spend watching Netflix.

2. Volunteer

There is always something you can do. There is always someone who needs help. Volunteering is a great way to spend your time. You could also get a look into a potential future career by volunteering for specific organizations. Some of the things I love most are animals and children under the age of five. I know there are different veterinary clinics and human shelters close by and I plan to volunteer at one over the summer. Also, there are different programs at my church all through the summer for all different ages of children. You bet I'll be spending my time there as well. I mean, who wouldn't want to cuddle with a puppy or hold a sleeping baby? Anyway, I bet that if you looked and asked around, you could find somewhere you'd love to volunteer.

3. Practice your hobbies

Do you like to write? Consider starting a blog, writing in a journal, or even applying to write for Odyssey! Do you like to sing? Sing your heart out until you are hoarse. Do you like to draw? Draw until your hands and wrists hurt too much. Do you like to play sports? Get a group of friends together and play regularly. You could even go to the gym or your local YMCA. Do you like to put color to a black-and-white illustrated image? Consider getting an adult coloring book and some crayons or colored pencils. They seem to be trendy these days. The point is this: summer is a perfect time to foster your craft. There aren't as many distractions and you can practice your hobby as much or as little as you like.

There are plenty of these college students can choose to do over the summer. You certainly don't have to do anything I suggested. But, don't waste the precious time. Soon, it will be time to hit the books again and I want to be able to say that I didn't waste my summer vacation.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
