the smell of sweet wine fills the summer air
bare legs slathered with pungent bug spray
reminding me of summers past when i was a child
and fun came from running on the grass
rather than drinking leisurely on the porch
change strikes overnight beyond our realm of recognition
we trade in striped rompers and overalls
for string bikinis and cutoffs
as we lose our innocence in the heat of adulthood
