7 Summer Resolutions As Inspired By My Uber Driver

Chatty Uber drivers can offer up some of the best advice if you just sit back and listen.

As I hopped into the backseat of my Uber driver Justin's red Chevy Malibu, the last thing I was looking for was a conversation. I had spent the previous night restless and unable to sleep, reflecting back on my freshman year of college. My dorm room was all packed up and my eyes were still puffy and red from crying as I said goodbye to my friends for the summer. I was filled with mixed emotions as I got the notification that my Uber driver had arrived and negative thoughts were rolling through my mind.

Spring semester was full of great memories, beautiful weather, new experiences, and lots of things I didn't want to leave behind. I was sad to part ways with my friends and was even sadder knowing I wouldn't be going back home to visit my friends from high school. My parents recently decided to move across the country to Houston, and unfortunately for me, this meant a lonely summer spent in a new state without friends or plans.

As soon as I got in the car, I knew I was in for a wild ride. Justin immediately struck me with his positivity and vibrant personality. He noticed I was feeling down and after a 10-minute rant over how frustrating boys can be, we had officially bonded. It may sound silly, but after 30 minutes, Justin had convinced me to keep my head high and live my best life this summer.

As he dropped me off, he told me to stay cool and beautiful, slay my Instagram feed, and "find a cute boy with emerald eyes" (his words exactly). Justin's positivity and kindness inspired me to make a few resolutions for this summer, in order to make it the best it can be.

1. Stay positive.

Despite my doubts about how fun or exciting my summer will be, I refuse to be negative. Life is only as good as we make it, and keeping a positive attitude about what lies ahead can only make it better.

2. Let go of your worries.

Justin assured me that any boy not begging on his knees for your attention isn't worth your time. Letting go of disappointment and expectations will allow you to live a more carefree, simple, and happy life this summer.

3. Live for you.

My goal this summer is to be the healthiest, most active, and happiest version of myself. Coming back to school in the fall, I want to be the best person I can be. Rather than following other people's expectations, I'm using summer as a chance to transform myself into my ideal self, not for anyone else, but for me.

4. Take lots of pictures.

As I told Justin I would be visiting my sister in Sweden this summer, he told me to take lots of pictures. I've recently been on a no-picture streak, I told him, as I've been trying to live in the moment. He assured me that documenting life's most important moments, even if it's only with a few, low quality pictures, will be worth it in the long run. I know as I look back on summer months from now, I will be happy I've documented the carefree and simpler times.

5. Be happy.

Being happy often seems easier said than done, but trying to pick yourself up and smiling really does go a long way. At the end of the day, we are the only ones in control of how we live our lives. Choosing to be happy and not letting other people dictate your emotions will be one of the most fulfilling feelings in your life.

6. Be kind to others.

Even though compliments about appearances are only surface-deep, Justin's multiple reassurances of how "beautiful" I was really made my day. Complimenting people, whether it be their looks or something deeper and more important, can go a long way. This summer, I vow to be a kinder person and to offer up more compliments.

7. Live your best life.

During the 30-minute ride, I'm pretty sure the phrase "girl, live your best life" was uttered at least 15 times. Living your best life can mean lots of things, and no matter where this summer takes me, I am determined to make the most out of it. To me, living my best life means being happy, carefree, positive, and learning to let go of all the worries and negativity floating in the back of my mind.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
