Summer is finally here! For some young people, summer means vacations, days at the pool, relaxing and tanning. For other people, however, summer time is prime time to get a job. There are no other obligations like school or extracurricular activities in the way, so a summer job is a perfect way to accumulate extra funds. But what if a fast-food joint is not your style? Or working retail makes you want to cry? Here are some different ways to earn cash this summer.

1. Babysitting/Nanny

If you love looking after children, think about getting a babysitting or nanny job. Many parents struggle with childcare during the summer. Since there is no school, parents need someone to watch their children, and some parents would prefer their children to have a more personalized care than a large summer program can offer. You can earn big bucks by watching two or three children during the weekdays. Try asking your family and family friends if they know of anyone who needs a nanny or babysitter during the summer months. Also, websites such as care.com offer a platform where you can advertise your childcare services.

2. Start your own business

Becoming your own CEO is not as scary as it may seem. Starting a simple business, such as a lawn mowing or yard work business, can be an awesome job in the summer. If you can gather up some friends or family members as workers, you can easily start your own small business. Think of a service that your community is in need of. Then, come up with a game plan for how you can market and sell this service. You can easily advertise through posters around town or putting an add in the local newspaper. What is great about starting your own business is that you can make your own hours and work by your own rules.

3. Sell a product online

If you are a master at arts and crafts, you can sell your products online! Websites like etsy.com allow you to create a profile and sell your crafty products to thousands of people. You can make and sell anything from jewelry to candles to paintings. Selling your own products online is great during the summer because you have extra time to create more product. Your product can even become a best-seller, landing you major cash.

4. Housesitting

Housesitting is awesome. All you have to do is make sure that people's homes stay safe and secure while they are gone. Sometimes you may stay at the house overnight, while other times you may just check on the house daily. You may have to water some plants or feed some cats, but overall, house sitting is a great way to earn money in a laid back way. Websites such as trustedhousesitters.com allow you to advertise your housesitting services in your area.

5. Tutoring

If you are strong in one or more areas of school, you can get paid to tutor kids during the summer. Lots of kids seek tutoring in the summertime in order to advance their skill in the classroom for the next school year. You can get paid by the hour to tutor children in math, science, English and more. Websites such as care.com or takelessons.com offer you a platform to advertise your tutoring services.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
