This happens every year. Sure enough come mid July, everyone starts saying things like "summer went by soooo fast " and back to school ads play on the T.V.
I refuse to mentally end my summer when there is a still a full month before schools across the country resume.
Why are people this way? We have a bad habit of jumping to the end and cutting things short. I'm 21 years old and I'm practically rounding my age up to 30 in my mind.
Actually, many people have already experienced this last month of summer. How is that possible? It happened back in April when everyone started talking about how fast the school year went by. That's when everyone starts to mentally check-out of school. Thinking about summer during the school year and the school year during the summer, and for what?
I've learned that getting older actually blurs the difference between summer and the rest of the year, anyway. What was once 3 months of vacation and freedom is now 3 months of a job, internship, or even summer school for many. But, the feeling of summer seems to remain in the air even when responsibilities continue through the season. Kids are out of school, pools are open, and everyone you follow on social media seems to be at a beach.
So yes, as you get older things begin to change. You may get busier, it may be harder to fit your friends into your schedule, and people will come and go from your life. But let's all agree to keep our summers in their entirety. Let's live in the moment. Stop thinking five steps ahead of ourselves. It's like the old saying, "wherever you are, be all there."
