Summers of sunshine
summers of rain
Ferris wheels cloud her mind
puffs of cotton candy stick her
hands together in a prayer,
a prayer for a summer better than the last.
She throws rings at bottles
and misses each try,
swings the hammer
at the high striker and doesn't ring the bell.
She gets her palm read by
a lady who smells of old rugs
and cigarettes.
She listens carefully
as the lady predicts
that she will fall in love
at least three times in her life.
She leaves the small booth
laughing to herself
because she has yet
to fall once.
The fluorescent lights around her
stain her cheeks colors of red and blue.
She finds herself on rides
alone because no one
bothered to ask her
if she wanted to sit beside them.
Instead she finds comfort
in the night air
that moves itself through her hair
and flutters her eyelashes.
To this day
you can find her at the fair,
dreaming of Ferris wheels
with puffs of cotton candy
stuck to her hands.
Each year she prays for
a summer better than the last
and each ride she finds herself alone.
