Everyone and their mother has at least heard about 13 Reasons Why. If for whatever reason you haven't, it's a Netflix original show based on the book "13 Reasons Why" which has been out since I was in middle school.
This show has opened the curtain for the awareness of suicide, especially in high school teens.
However suicide is nothing new. Suicide has always been the dark ghost lurking behind the people you would never think of.
It's a hard topic to speak about. Its not easy to swallow.
However, it is a topic that needs to be discussed. Its a topic that every single person in this world should be educated on.
Everyone is going through something that you have ABSOLUTELY no idea about. There are people suffering behind closed doors that are silently screaming for help through their actions.
In the Netflix series, the teenager, Hannah Baker, made 13 tapes with 13 reasons why she killed herself. It was news to the people she "blamed" yet they never wanted to blame themselves. Their smallest actions made a huge impact on Hannah.
But they had absolutely no idea.
A simple argument between you and a friend could add to the burden they feel.
A joke spread around school could add to it.
High school for me personally was the worst time of my life. I was going through so many things that people honestly probably still have no idea about.
I know I'm not the only one who went through sh*t. I know that people went through things worse than mine. But the point is, you have no idea what someone is going through. You have no idea that what you do or say to a person could lead to suicide.
High school is full of bullies who teachers and staff always say "don't exist" or they are a "bully free zone" which is COMPLETE bullsh*t. There are bullies around every single corner.
Instead of once in awhile assembly's or "talks" about bullying, high schools should take a bigger step. EVERY single educator should be educated themselves about bullying and suicide.
13 Reasons Why's fame will fade, and people will forget. This happens every time something bad happens in this world. We hound on it for about a month and then its like it vanishes and no one cares.
Suicide is not anything new. Suicide has always been around.
But suicide is not the answer. If you or someone you know is depressed or is showing signs of thoughts of suicide, please call the suicide hotline. Help someone out. Be there for them. Be present. Be educated.
Suicide isn't the answer. No matter what.
If anyone reading this has any thoughts about committing suicide, even if you don't know me, I'm here to talk. I'm here for you.
#educateyourself.
