Recently in the news, there has been two terrible incidents. Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain committed suicide and to the entire world these were tragic losses.
After hearing about this, it made me open my eyes to something so much bigger than two happenings that no one saw coming. That is the main thing…no one saw both of them coming. Perhaps are we blinded by too much to see what is going on with some people? I know we do not know both of those two people personally but what about those that are around you…are you watching and listening?
To me…Kate Spade was a pretty designer bag that I so desperately wanted to put on my shelf and admire. I looked at her as someone who was so successful and had it all. Fame and Fortune. She was set for her entire life…how hard could her days be? And that is clearly where I had misjudgment. My whole life, I never knew anything more about Kate Spade. I did not know she sold her brand to someone else. Even more importantly, I did not know that she struggled with depression. My mistake to assume that since she is a designer handbag everyone carries around means she is not struggling with inner battles everyday. It is so true when people say, "never judge a book by the cover". Even those with the most glamorous lives, still have to give it their everything to make it through the day.
To me…Anthony Bourdain was someone I had no idea even existed. From what I have see on the internet, he is a top chef. After talking to some people, it was clear as day that this was a tragic loss just like any other person. It was unexpected. When these things happen, it is a loss for everyone, no matter who the person. Anthony was dealing with inner demons that he could not seem to turn off. People look at him as this amazing chef and author. We fail to see the reality of these famous, well-known, celebrities and what really may be behind the fame and the fortune.
I pray every night that someday, whoever is going through similar times like these two, that they find peace within themselves. These two tragic losses have brought awareness to society on how serious suicide is. It shows that every life matters and at any moment it can be taken from you. Behind fame and fortune are people with hearts and minds that are being taken advantage of and need the attention that they deserve. There will be no about of money or followers to show people that those people struggle daily too. We need to open our eyes to see the broken world around us and help day by day to put the pieces back together slowly.
