I am not a suburban kind of guy.
Didn't really know that I wasn't a suburban type, not till I experienced it first hand. I am a country type of guy. Here are few reasons why.
1. Too close to my giant bubble
In a typical suburb, houses are extremely close together. Sometimes, you can even sit and watch what tv show your neighbors are watching...from your dining room. Which means I can't walk around my house in my underwear, or you know, nothing (hey, we all shower and forget to make sure that there is a clean towel in the bathroom with us.) I have to make sure the window blinds are shut and if they aren't, skim myself to the closet, hoping no one is looking into my house.
2. Small talk
Can't pull into my driveway and sit there and think for a few minutes, if you do this, your neighbors will surely take note and think that you are having marital problems or that you are regretting the decisions in your life. People do this, I am not crazy. What's worse is when you go to get your mail or mow the lawn and the neighbor is outside at the same time. Once you guys make that awkward eye contact, it's time for the good ol' awkward small talk.
3. Bonfires
While you can in some cases have a fire with a small fire pit in the backyard, what makes this annoying is that if you are in a suburb where you have neighbors behind you. You and everyone else knows that someone is watching you guys out there, and as soon as you light a firework or do something stupid with the fire, the cops and firefighters will be at your door shortly.
These are just a few things that I have had to figure out and adjust to while living in a suburb. Now, the suburbs aren't all bad or terrible. I believe that it fits some people perfectly and others not so well. I happen to be one that doesn't fit the mold all that well. It works both ways; some people just don't fit the mold of living in the country.
For me there is a certain feeling that I get when I am in the country, like all of the world's problems, controversies and hatred all meltaway. I feel relaxed, free of thoughts and worry. The many smells out in the country warm my soul, from the smell of horse manure, to wild strawberries, to the crisp smell of autumn. Nothing can compare, for me nothing does. Just like walking a dirt road at sunset, while I like walking downtown or walking around a suburb neighborhood I would rather walk a dirt road and listen to the sound of the gravel beneath my feet with every step that I take.
Someday, I will make it back to the countryside. Someday, I will share these things that I hold near and dear to my heart with my wife and daughter.
