In college, there are times when a stressful week can feel like a whole year. Work and studying can get overwhelming and it is easy to find yourself pushing it off or procrastinating. Before you know it, it's way too late at night, you're sitting at your desk ready to have a mental breakdown, and all you want to do is go to sleep. Studying is one of the most important parts of going to college, so you have to learn to tackle it somehow.

Here are some helpful tips to help you succeed in college include:

1. Get organized.

Organizing is key to help you succeed. It is easy to know what you have to get done when you stay organized and structured. Lists, planners, and sticky notes all help divide and conquer what you have to accomplish.

2. Get sleep.

People have a misconception that if you stay up all night studying the night before a test you will succeed. However, it is often times hard for your brain to even retain the information that you are learning at 4 a.m because it is exhausted and overworked. Sleep helps renew your body.

3. Don't multitask.

Although everyone can admit to doing too much at once, it isn't good for you to bite off more than you can chew. In other words, multitasking is bad and often times back you take steps back in your studying progress. Set your mind to one focus, achieve it, and then move onto another.

4. Manage your study space.

Find a spot that works for you and helps you focus. It is always good to change scenery or environments to help you rejuvenate your body and not get tired or bored. However, wherever you choose to study make sure it is quiet and away from any sort of distractions.

5. Find a study group.

Depending on the subject it is sometimes helpful to get together with people that are in the same class as you and study with them so you have a source to reach out to when you have questions or need clarity about a certain part of the subject.

7. Take a break.

It is always good to allow yourself to take a breather and walk around to stretch your legs after sitting for hours writing notes, reading a textbook, or looking at your computer screen. This gives your brain a break and an opportunity for you to relax a bit.

8. Do not cram.

Cramming is never good before a big test. Always start studying early on before the test date so that you have times to retain the information, ask questions if you need, and review your notes.

9. Listen to relaxing music.

Music has been proven to help you focus, however, listen to classical or calming music that could help you zone in on what you need to study.

10. Whatever you do, STAY CALM.

Stress interferes with success. If you stress out it takes your mind and your focus off of studying and understanding the information. Don't let stress get the best of you, stay calm and ace the test.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
