The debate between about which is the better pet, dogs or cats, has extra fuel due to a study published by Vanderbilt University.
Published in the journal, Frontiers in Neuroanatomy, the study finds that despite not having the largest brain, dogs have more neurons in the cerebral cortex than cats. Neurons send messages and signals throughout the body, while the cerebral cortex is responsible for thought, perception, and language. The study also looked into the number of neurons found in bears, raccoons, lions, hyenas, mongooses, and ferrets, and found that brain size had no correlation between brain size and the number of neurons present.
Dogs have 530 million neurons, more than double that of a cat. However, this number dwarfs the 16 billion neurons found in humans.
So if you ever find yourself in a cats vs. dogs argument, just remember: dogs are smarter.
