Although there are millions of other things to do with our free time that would be more enjoyable, studying is still imperative for doing well in school. Going out, watching movies, and spending hours lurking on Instagram are oftentimes the choices we gravitate towards when it comes to studying. Procrastination is the enemy, but face it, we've all been there. If you need places to study that'll help you focus, even while cramming tons of information a few days before an exam, here are some that I have had great experiences with and hope you do too!
A local coffee shop.
The aesthetic escape. Coffee shops are a comfortable place for you and your textbooks to bond. Coffee shops typically come with many perks. One good thing about studying there is the accessibility to snacks and drinks. I personally always feel more awake and focused when I've had something to eat or drink (especially coffee). Most shops offer free WiFi, so bringing your laptop as a resource for earning material is always a good idea. This is definitely a spot for students who enjoy a little background noise while studying.
The library or study rooms.
The distraction dissolver. The library may seem like the cliche location for studying, but it also guarantees you stay in the zone. Free of distractions, most libraries are built with floors for different levels of quietness. For example, at the Robert Manning Strozier Library at Florida State University, it is pretty familiar to students that the first floor is where you'll find the most conversations and laughing since that's also the floor of Starbucks and the entrance/exit. The fifth floor, though, is where you could hear a pin drop. Depending on the type of assignment you're working on, or how desperately you need to focus, keep this tip in mind and go to the floor at libraries that fits your situation. Sometimes, sitting away from your friends can be a good thing. Find a window for some natural lighting, or a desk with dividers to keep your attention on your work at all times.
A park or a field.
The natural beauty. Natural light, serene surroundings, and a breeze -what could go wrong? In my opinion, parks are a great way to feel at peace, especially if there is a lake nearby. It is always smart to pick a spot in the shade- under a tree is usually my go-to. This way, if the sun decides to pierce through some clouds, the lighting could help indirectly brighten your landscape minus the sweat and sunburns. Another way to make studying more comfortable in this setting is by hanging a hammock between two trees. This way, you could lay back and work comfortably.
Your bedroom.
The comfortable route. Studying in your room gives you the chance to be completely yourself and not worry about anyone around you becoming a distraction. Playing soft background music is a good way to help focus during studying because sometimes if a room is too quiet, any little noise could lose your train of thought. In your room, you could connect your music to a speaker or put your phone somewhere far from hand's reach and play the calming songs out loud. This is a studying tip I use, and it makes me feel more comfortable than wearing headphones and having the music play directly in my ears.
I hope these study spot ideas motivate you to study! The perfect study space is nonexistent; there's always going to be room for minor distractions like your cell phone, birds chirping, or talkative friends. It is up to you to take control of the situation and make changes necessary to help you get that 'A.'
