Immediately after the tragedy of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, survivors went to work on trying to reform U.S gun laws. While the recent stakeout at the White House ended up with the vote not ending in their favor, these young activists are not letting it stop them from trying to make change.
The students from Parkland have gained a massive amount of followers, including the women's march group. Many people are standing up with them, participating in stakeouts and preparing for the upcoming march in March that will protest gun laws.
Even with the large group of followers, there are those who are opposed to what the survivors are protesting, and there are those who say that the students/survivors are not actually students/survivors of the mass shooting. Rather, they claim they are crisis actors that the Democrats have hired in order to push their liberal agenda.
These conspiracy theories have been popping up on several social media sites (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter.) Trying to shut them down is like playing a game of whack-a-mole. YouTube, which has recently gained backlash for promoting Logan Paul's video, has gone under fire for promoting a video about the Florida school shooting. Although the video was trending for just a short while and was eventually taken down, it did gain traction with some people.
One of the students and activists from Parkland, David Hogg, stated "I'm someone who had to witness this and live through this and I continue to be having to do that. I'm not acting on anybody's behalf," during an interview with Anderson Cooper from CNN.
These conspiracy theories are not only offensive to those who survived the shooting at the Florida high school, but offensive to those who were fatally shot and to the victims of other mass shootings. Stating that the shootings did not actually happen or that the victims who are speaking out for more gun control are actors is downright ignorant. Believing or promoting these theories is just as ignorant and cruel.
These are real people who went through a traumatic experience and are just trying to make change so that the rest of the kids of today and those of the future don't ever have to go through the same tragedy.
