For students, summer is a time for relaxation away from responsibilities of the school year. It means getting to do really anything you want. Want to go to the pool for the day on a Tuesday? No problem, grab your friends and go. But for a lot of college students, summer comes with summer courses. Although summer courses are helpful in the long run, allowing you to get certain classes out of the way in order to graduate, they definitely have a lot of things that come with them that make for a difficult summer.
Registering at other schools
For a lot of people, we live several hours from where we go to school, so unless we plan to stay there for the summer, we have to register for the class we need at a different school. Which means have to deal with applications, transcripts, different types of websites they use for their classes, paying for a class, all in different long lines that last forever. This can definitely be a frustrating situation, and makes summer classes even less appealing.
Staying out late
If you have a class at 8am on a Monday morning during a normal semester, yes it sucks, but you most likely went to bed at a decent time because a lot of your friends were in the same vote. But, during the summer it's likely a lot of your friends don’t have class on Monday, so they go out on Sunday nights and of course, you want to join them cause its summer and you want to have as much fun as possible. But you’re really regretting it the next morning when that alarm goes off.
Finding time to study
Between different responsibilities, spending time with friends, and vacations, trying to find the time to study for a summer class can definitely be more difficult. If you are anything like me, you probably procrastinate even more than you do during the school year. You really have to be disciplined and find the time to study, even if that means telling your friends you can't go out that night.
You have a summer job also
For me, the past 3 summers since I've been in college, I've taken summer classes. But I've also had a job. So trying to go to class while working makes for a more difficult time. Especially because I work a lot more hours in the summer than I do in the school year. I know this is the case for a lot of my friends, their place of employment schedules them for a lot more hours cause it's summer and they don’t have class.
Basically, summer classes are just the same struggle as classes during a normal semester, but the thought of summer classes is just down right depressing. You don’t really get the summer break you were looking for, but hey, at least you’re ahead of the game, and maybe you’ll be lucky and won't has to take any next year. But, if you do, well at least you know what to expect.
