As the week went on by, Miles was always surprised by the fact he seemed to start growing into Wanda’s group. He now has Wade texting him, wanting to hang out, and the other guys seem to be just as supportive of the idea. Miles brought that thought up to Wanda, and her smile tells him all. Jennifer seems to be warming up to the idea of him being around as well. And the best thing of all, they do not seem to care if Miles’ siblings sit with them; they seem to welcome it. Miles noticed that Claude has even opened a little as he is always serious.
“Miles! We gotta get going!” Miles heard his mother call from the front door.
“Coming, mom!” Miles replied before he threw on his shoes and ran out of his room, closing the door as he went.
“We have to hurry, as I want to make sure to get you ready for Saturday, and tonight is the only night which will work for me. We must get your hair done, suit, schedule the corsage, everything! So much to do; so little time to do it.” Miles opened the front door for his mother, and they walked to the car together. He opened the passenger car door for her as well, as Trudy has been making him practice on his date manners all week. She told him she didn’t want to see him be rude to Wanda.
As he got into the driver’s seat, he turned to his mother. “Mom, we’ll be fine. We got time, it is only four o’clock. We have the hair appointment scheduled at four-thirty, and the suit store is practically right next door. And if we can’t get the corsage, I’ll just give her a bouquet of roses or something. They will last a lot longer than something on her wrist.”
“No, son, the corsage is just as important. It is a sign to let others know she is taken,” Trudy tisked at him as Miles started up the car.
“Alright, alright, but my point is, we’ll get everything done. It’s Thursday night, and if we cannot do everything tonight, I will get whatever is left tomorrow night. Mom, we’ve got this,” Miles smiled at her before he turned around to look in the back window to make sure no one was coming. As he pulled out of the driveway, he turned his wheels towards the north, as he needed to make sure the car would go in the right direction towards Madison. Madison had the closest mall, so they usually made the trip there.
“Now, just be careful when we get into Madison. I know we’ve been practicing all week, but you are still getting used to driving. If you need me to drive, just let me know.” Trudy said as Miles looked both ways for oncoming cars at the intersection. When he did not see any, he turned right to go the direction they needed to.
“Yes, mom, I will do that,” Miles smiled at her as he knew his mom was just worried about his nerves. His mother has already told him he trusts her with his driving. They chatted on the way, making small talk here and there. Once they reached the mall, Miles parked as close to the building as he could, but even during the weeknights, the mall parking lot always seemed to be busy. He settled the car, put it in park and turned off the car. They both got out at the same time, and they went in walking towards their destination.
“Hello, welcome to HairCutters,” one of the hairdressers smiled at them as soon as they walked into the store. “What can we do for you today?”
“Yes, we had an appointment for Miles Wragner,” Miles heard his mother request as the woman looked at the computer screen. She nodded once the information was confirmed.
“Alright, I’ll lead you over to Danielle’s seat. She ran out just for a minute, but she will be back soon.” The woman spoke as she walked across the floor towards one of the chairs. She directed him to the chair and threw one of the sheets over him. Then, she turned back to the desk.
“So, I know you like your hair long, but I am requesting that you go a military cut,” Miles’ mother asked. He turned in the chair, shell-shocked as he grabbed his hair.
“What do you mean, military cut! I love my hair….”
“I know you do, sweetie, but I think you should do this for prom. It may be something that seems old fashioned, but when going on the date, it is just something you do. You make sure you look your best—and I know your best is when you don’t have so much weighing that wonderful brain down.” Miles looked as his mother smiled. He sighed but nodded, wanting to look his best for Wanda.
“Hi, sorry about that,” a young woman paced over to them. She flipped her wavy, blonde hair over her shoulder before she started setting up her station. “I needed to go get a quick something. Now, what are we doing today? Prom haircut?”
“Yes, Danielle, he is going to prom,” his mother smiled as he nodded.
“I want to look like a gentleman for my date. My mom thinks I need a military haircut,” Miles suggested.
“Don’t worry; I got you covered. Let’s do this,” Danielle smiled before picking up her scissors and comb. Miles heard the snip of the scissors as she ran the comb through his hair. Miles looked over to his mother to see her flipping through a magazine.
After fifteen minutes, Danielle piped in with a “Done” and Miles looked up into the mirror to see his hair standing up straight.
“It looks good,” Trudy said as she smiled at Miles. “Different, I know, but good.”
“Yea, I think I can get used to this—at least for a little bit,” Miles nodded as he smiled at the ladies. Miles went over to pay before they turned and went around the mall getting to the suit store. He was measured and they found the perfect suit for him before leaving the mall. Once they were done, they headed back home, making a quick stop at the flower shop for the corsage.
