The Struggles of Living Far Away From Your Sister

There will most likely come a time in every sister relationship where you will be separated and no longer living under the same roof. Whether it be five or five-hundred miles away, not living with your sister can present many struggles you were not aware of.

1. No longer having her closet to raid.

Having a sister means her closet is just an extension of your own. When you two are home together it's hard to tell what is yours and what is hers. As soon as you separate you suddenly realize that your wardrobe is missing some of your favorite items, and that's because they were actually hers.

2. Advice can't come from just a shout down the hallway.

Do these shoes work with dress? What do I text him back? What's this spot on my back? Should I take this internship? Should I cut all my hair off? So many questions that you're used to just running to her to answer, and now that instant advice is whole a phone call away.

3. Needing to plan FaceTime dates.

Since, of course, you'll be missing the consistent presence of her face you'll want to video chat. With video chatting comes coordinating a time and place, which can be challenging. Not to mention you better make sure your laptop is charged and wifi isn't spotty. But you'll do it, because how else are you supposed to scream like a 5-year-old when her face pops up on the camera.

4. No one else understands the pure chaos of your family.

You could try to describe why your family does what they do to your friends. You could try to describe the logistics of your third cousin's wedding you have to find a dress for. You could try to gush over how your baby cousin is the cutest thing to ever exist. You could try to explain why you have 3 Christmas dinners to attend. But no one will quite know the ins and outs of your family like your sister.

5. She's the only person you can hate one second and turn to for love the next.

There's no rebound rate like the love from a sister. You could be mercilessly making fun of her one minute and then giving her a bear hug the next. She'll never actually stay mad at you, and she's more than prepared to handle your tantrums. She's the only person you can shout at and still know she'll have your back without fail. That's a quality only found with her unconditional love.

6. You need to wait for her approval of the other people in your life.

First impressions are important, and anyone in your life knows your sister's opinion means everything to you. New best friend? She'll have to give the thumbs up. New significant other in your life? She'll have to give the okay. Unfortunately, with the distance means her final opinion on anyone else in your life will have to wait till she visits.

7. No one else gets your inside jokes.

After growing up together for most of your lives you're bound to have a ton of inside jokes together. But when that specific funny thing happens, and you die laughing, you usually find you're the only one laughing in the crowd. You know you'll have to turn to your phone to text her immediately because she'll be the only other person that will enjoy the same thing you find so amusing.

8. You constantly have to talk about her to people.

For some reason, whenever you two are apart, every situation and conversation seems relevant to something that has to do with your sister. Whether it be a fact about her or describing an experience you two had together, you're constantly mentioning her. At this point, your friends probably know more about her than most other people in your life.

9. You. Miss. Her.

It's hard being so far apart from your sister. But you know that no matter how many miles separate you two, you'll always be there for one another. Even if you can't be together in person, you know you'll always have someone in your corner rooting for you from afar.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
