The Odyssey

Girls with curly hair are both blessed and cursed. Some days people envy our hair, and others we contemplate shaving our whole head. We truly have a love hate relationship with our hair.

1. Never brush it dry.

We understand that there is a no way that a girl with curly hair can brush her hair without it being wet unless we want a frizz ball. We will forever get the question on why we don’t brush our hair though.

2. It grows when you straighten it.

We don’t fully understand how long our hair is until we straighten it, and others around us don't either. Our hair can grow inches right before our eyes. And no, it is not fake; this is our real hair.

3. People ask how you got your hair so curly.

The reaction from girls with pin straight hair when they ask us how our hair got the way it is will forever be the same: shocked. We shower, and it just looks like this? Well after a whole bottle of mousse and leave-in conditioner, of course.

4. Old ladies envy you.

I cant even count how many times I’ve had an old lady comment on my hair. I get comments about how much they pay for hair like mine and how lucky am I. *Eye Roll*

5. You've tried every mousse/hair spray/leave-in conditioner combination out there.

I have seriously tried every gel, hair spray, leave-in conditioner, and mousse combination out there, and I think I’ve finally found what works for me--but then something new comes out, and I have to try it. I have an organizer in my bedroom full of half-used products that were suppose to work, but never did. I want my hair to stay in my place, but not be crunchy. I want my hair to look natural, but not frizzy when I drive with the car windows down. There’s a real struggle.

6. It has a mind of its own.

Simple. My hair does what it wants, no matter how hard I try. I just give in and wear it in a bun 24/7.

7. There is a difference between naturally curly hair and curled hair.

Naturally curly is not easy to maintain and does not consist of 6 large curls at our ends. Curly hair comes from your roots with frizz, tangles, and more frizz.

8. Everyone has a different type of curly hair.

Everyone is unique with unique curly hair. Something might work great for one person's curls, and it doesn't even come close to working for someone else. Every type is beautiful and unique, and we can all understand each others hair struggles.

9. Whenever you see someone with nice curly hair, you want to ask them what their routine is.

There's always going to be that one person who you wish you knew what they did to keep their hair looking so good every time you see them, but you don't want to ask because you’re nervous...so you just hair crush from a distance

Although there are times that I've hated my hair, spent days straightening it, trying everything in the book to tame it, I've grown to love it. Sometimes its okay to not know what to do with it. Or want to cut it short or even grow it long. Curly hair is so unique and beautiful that it becomes part of who we are.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
