Struggles Only Broadcast Students Understand

Every college major is difficult in their own ways. I do not think that any major is any easier or harder than another, others thrive where others lack.

Science majors would probably have a hard time in apparel merchandising, and HBM majors would probably struggle in engineering.

Being a communication major, I cannot tell you how many times I have had people tell me that I chose the easy major. Which is really annoying considering how much time and effort I have to put into being a broadcast student.

10-20 hours in lab per week, creating 15-30 minute newscasts every weeknight in less than five hours, carrying over 10 pounds of equipment across campus along with our backpacks, trying to find a decent story in this small town... Just to name a few.

It's isn't as easy as you think. Here are 13 struggles that only broadcast students understand:

1. Looking like a pack mule at least once a week:

Because carrying three backpacks is normal, right?

2. When the live shot was working just fine up until 5 minutes before taping:

This is a panic like no other.

3. How you feel after putting together a breaking news story in less than two hours:

Nothing like taping a stand-up, b-roll, interviews, writing a good script, and editing it all together in a time crunch.

4. How it feels when technology lets you down in almost every aspect:

Camera batteries dying, Avid malfunctioning, CNN Newssource crashing, the infamous blue screen of death, you name it, it's happened to us.

5. When something happens during lab and you try to explain it to you non-broadcast friends and they're just like:

It's like a "you had to be there moment" but they still wouldn't understand.

6. When you come to lab camera ready and your producer tells you that the live shot is canceled:

You're telling me I just used my Becca Highlighter and wore this blazer for nothing?!

7. When people constantly come up to you on campus and ask you what are you doing:

You'd think it would be obvious considering the huge camera and five-foot tripod in front of me.

8. When an interview gets canceled or someone refuses to comment:

Finally finding a decent news story, and it can be ruined before it's even started.

9. Waiting for your footage to transcode like:

It once took 45 minutes for four interviews to transcode. Transcoding takes longer than editing, to be honest.

10. Recording your stand up on campus when there are a ton of people around:

What's so weird about seeing someone recording themselves talking to a camera? It's like we're aliens or something.

11. Your reaction to interviewing the most awkward person ever:

Whether their answers are just weird, or they won't give you anything but one-word answers, it's the worst.

12. When you finish recording your Stand-Up or an interview and realize you forgot to turn on the microphone:

It seriously feels like the end of the world.

13. My reaction when people say to me, "Oh, you're a COMM major? School must be so easy":

It may not be equations or chemicals, but it's not "easy."

It may not seem that hard to you, but I would love to see you walk a day in a broadcast majors shoes.

And never, ever tell a communications major that they chose the "easy" major.

We didn't choose it because it's "easy," we chose it because we love it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
