Equality vs Equity
A recent article stirred the social media platforms of young people regarding equality among men and women in regards to the Bible. This article poorly portrays the Word of God, however was written with good intent. This may sound shocking, but it is possible to be strong, independent, and submissive.
As a Christian myself, I have always felt called to lead. To lead in every aspect of my life. However I also whole-heartedly believe it is my husbands responsivility to lead and guide my home, our relationship, and our family. My feelings and beliefs come straight from the first book of the Bible, which states, "Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." He created us EQUAL as rulers over all creatures IN HIS IMAGE.
Now, the next part in the Bible is something I struggle with daily, because I am very independent. Brace yourself ladies. Genesis 2:18 states, "The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." God created us to be HELPERS. He knew man needed HELP. I was first my father’s right hand helper, and now I am my husband’s. God created me for this purpose.
Continue reading Genesis chapter three. Adam does not lead his family and ends up in quite a bit of trouble. This is the first instance of sin, as well as the first instance of women being leaders. Then continue on focus Proverbs chapter 31, where the perfect woman is laid out.
Proverbs 31 clearly shows that women were created to be STRONG, INDEPENDENT, SUBMISSIVE HELPERS. As well as being a helper, (outside of our parents and husband) we are made to be leaders, teachers, care-givers, and hard workers.
Equality is giving everyone the same thing. Equity is giving everyone the tools they need to reach the same goal. We, as men and women, are not equal. We each need different tools to reach the same goals. Do not confuse submissiveness with incapability.
