Have you ever felt so overwhelmed with the world that you want to just collapse on your bed and take a day-long nap? I have. Waking up and seeing that the sun has set and you've gotten absolutely nothing done is a terrible feeling. Fear not; there is a healthier and more rewarding alternative. In fact, I can recommend six!
1. Do Yoga
Yoga is such a relaxing way to bring your body and mind back to a natural balance. The major components include breathing and movement. It's something you can do by yourself or with a class, wherever, and whenever is comfortable for you. This will definitely allow you to become more aware of your self and the world around you. Even congresswomen with hectic schedules and big responsibilities have time to do it! (See picture: Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard).
2. Slow Down
Especially in New York, it's easy to succumb to the quick rush of things. In order to lessen your stress, however, it's important to take a step back (and maybe even slower steps walking on the streets). Don't worry, you won't fall behind! This strategy will help you even better manage your energy levels so you won't tire out too quickly.
3. Listen to Music
Good music can be super therapeutic in the sense that it has the power to affect your emotions and change your mood. When you're feeling stressed, turn up the tunes! (Bonus: If you're like me, Beyoncé or year-round Christmas playlists yield instant happiness). And when you feel like it, dance to the beat!
4. Google: Cute Motivational Quotes
These are perfect to read whenever you need a quick pick-me-up. It puts things into perspective and reminds you that you're more capable than you believe in the moment. (Hint: Adding "tumblr" to the end of every search query provides cuter and more artsy content for visual pleasure).
5. Chill Out With People You Love
Surrounding yourself with a solid support system is one of the best cures to mid-term blues. From friends and family to even classmates you just met, there will always be someone out there who believes in you. If you're not the type to go out and hang out with friends in person, it's the 21st century and internet friendships are a thing! You are not alone.
6. Take a QUICK Nap
If you really need your sleep, definitely get it. Naps are key. Set an alarm, and make sure you don't snooze your life away!
We're almost there. Break is just around the corner, and you are still alive! No matter how terrible college seems (especially if you're a first-year still getting adjusted), you will survive this.
Note: If you're at Barnard, the McIntosh Activities Council Wellness Committee is hosting a Rooftop Yoga: Midterm Meditation session on October 19th (signups are required, so keep an eye out!).
