With many college students at or nearing their impending graduations from their respective universities, the prospect of job hunting can be an intimidating element. Many students will require assistance in both their confidence and options when it comes to selecting a job that perhaps turns into a career. This is not what this is about. This is about the strangest jobs from around the world.
1. Bike Fisher
In Amsterdam, where a large portion of the population commutes and travels by use of bicycle and in a city where canals intersect the large portion of the landmass, the two inevitably and strangely collide. The job of a bike fisher in Amsterdam is to go around to the various canals and collect bikes that were, for some reason, abandoned in the water. Why anyone would lose their bike in a canal and not even bother to recover their own property is its own mystery.
2. Pet Food Taster
In the same vein as dog collar tester, I don’t see the point of using a human for a job that isn't aimed at them in the first place. A pet food taster as the name implies tastes pet food and makes sure it's - something? A fun fact - dog food is actually safe for human consumption. Though by no means is its taste designed to be appealing to humans. One should think the best tester of dog food would be a dog, but what do we know?
3. Gum Buster
Like the bitter younger brother of the more successful 1984 busters, a gum buster’s job is to clean gum off sidewalks and buildings. Using what is essentially an elongated iron, a gum buster can be stationed all over where gum might be found (looking at you, New York). Gum busters can actually make off quite well with Insider Job’s showing that the upper salaries these workers have to be near 40,000 a year.
4. Duck Master
A job that is as cool as it sounds offered at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, which was searching for someone to look after and show off the hotel’s prized ducks to guests. Essentially being a miniature zoo keeper except in a hotel, the duck master feeds and cleans the animals to ensure they are in optimal presentation to bedazzle guests.
5. Chicken Sexer
Whilst probably the most unfortunate sounding position especially marked on a tax form, a chicken sexer does not make sweet love to poultry. It would be highly illegal to do that, actually. A chicken sexer’s job is to check newborn chicks to see if they’re male or female for the purpose of sorting. In some places there are even chicken sexing competitions which is probably for the best they don’t go around publicly advertising. They might want to work on getting a different title.
