No, I’m not lactose intolerant, trying to lose weight or anything that could easily justify my choice; honestly, I just felt unhealthy.
It could’ve been any number of things I guess. I mean, I am a college student. I don’t necessarily have the healthiest of diets, but I thought cutting out dairy would clean it up a bit.
I understand the weird looks when I have to explain to people why I can't have that piece of pizza. I love pizza, I have a Domino’s obsession, and it kills me, but I know I’m better without it. People think I’m crazy for restricting myself, but I don’t really miss it anymore.
Last year, I stopped eating dairy for about two months for the same reason: I felt like my body would benefit from no cheese, no milk, nothing. Starting back up again wasn’t the hardest decision, but it was difficult to maintain in the beginning. Within the first week or so of stopping eating dairy, I may or may not have made my friend eat a Klondike bar in order to watch her eat it...sue me.
It’s been about a month since I’m back to no dairy and I feel good.
Thinking about an amazingly large meal of mac n cheese sounds like it would taste heavenly, but also like I would be so lethargic afterward. Not being able to eat dairy forces me to choose new things I may not have eaten before.
Dairy isn’t unhealthy if eaten in moderation. Anything in moderation is fine, but I didn’t feel like that was where I was in my diet by eating a minimum of three string cheese sticks a day. For me, I feel good not eating dairy; I don’t necessarily miss it anymore.
If you’re the type of person to try anything once, I recommend going dairy-free. If you hate it, there’s an easy fix, don’t worry.
