Growing up, I was raised on The Simpsons. Along with The Officeand Spongebob Squarepants, it was one of my favorites. As a kid I thought it was funny, but as I grew older I saw the genius behind it. The Simpsons is one of the longest running shows on television, and its satirical voice has never been lost. The show has evolved with time and its commentary on society and pop culture. FX has been airing every episode of the Simpsons since Thanksgiving Day and won't stop until all 600 have hit the screen. Some people live for 25 Days of Christmas; I live for this.
2016 has been a hell of a year. We lost some legends, memes are spiraling out of control, and we had one of the dirtiest elections our country has ever seen. We lost Bowie, Prince, and Snape. Mike the Tiger is gone, and even *sigh* Harambe. There's a meme for everything, whether it's appropriate or not
The election distracted a lot of people from their lives and what they love. We were too busy MAGA-ing or Being With Her that we forgot what its like to live in a non-election year. People cared more, or perhaps pretended to care more, about American politics than they ever have. 2016 has been stressful, and now is the time to unwindulax.
Anytime you sit down and watch The Simpsons, you're guaranteed to laugh, cry, or feel some kind of emotion. The show's writing is poignant and edgy. It's not always a "laugh-out-loud" type of show, but the content is always relatable.
Whenever I watch The Simpsons, I'm able to laugh at things in life we often find ridiculous. From making fun of celebrities to making comments on our country's commercialism, The Simpsons finds a way to hit all the right marks.
If you feel like 2016 has burnt you out, give the Simpsons 600 episode marathon a chance. Every year can often feel like a rush and we sometimes lose track of what we want. Before you dive into finals, take a break and watch some Simpsons. There's a reason the show has been on longer than you've been born. Watch or get bent!
