Shaming Certain Majors Is Majorly Wrong

We all work hard, we really do.

Shaming Certain Majors Is Majorly Wrong

The other day as I sat in the student union ferociously typing a paper I took a quick break to grab me some Starbucks. This girl can't do her assignments unless she has at least one cup of coffee to help her power through. As I stood in line debating on whether I wanted to try something new or get my usual (I, of course, got my usual even after I promised myself I'd try something new) I couldn't help but over here a conversation between a couple of guys.

While most of the time I only half listen to other people's conversations or just listen in for a good laugh I couldn't help but feel kind of upset when I heard what they were saying.

I heard a couple guys actually saying that my major wasn't hard at all and that anybody could get a degree in it. Given, they had no idea that I was in the program they were bashing otherwise they'd probably have something else to say. It upset me to hear that some people don't think I work as hard as others. I know how hard I work to achieve my grades and goals and would never put someone else's major down. I know how hard everyone in all majors has it. It's no easy task to juggle courses, work, and a social life for anyone regardless of what their declared major is.

I get it. I really do. Whenever you become overwhelmed with school work you feel like nobody else on this Earth has ever been as stressed as you. It can seem unfair and you can be left feeling like your field has more work than anybody else's. This just isn't true. Everyone of every single field of study has their own work to do. How would you truly know that their work is easier than yours unless you're in it yourself? Chances are you may think their workload is easy, but for them, it could be overwhelming.

The moral of the story is that we all get stressed out no matter what program we're in. Stop shaming some majors over others. Think about how you would feel if someone was shaming what you were doing, saying that you don't work as hard as them. It would crush you. So please, if you take anything away from this, remember that every college student is working hard towards their goals, no matter what field they are in.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
