Fall is back, and that means that football season has returned as well. This is an exciting time of year for many football fans, so they will make it a point to see their favorite team play all of their games, no matter if it’s high school, college, or NFL.
I enjoy going to see football games as well, but every year I am always annoyed at how the quality of a school gets judged based on the quality of its football program. For example, the high school I went to was in a town with two other high schools that had better football teams than we had. I would always hear people say that the other schools were so much better in every way because they had good football teams, when that was absolutely not the case at all.
Football isn't everything; it's not even the most important thing. It's one strange in a tapestry, surrounded by the arts, classes, community, and so much more.
So while we should definitely keep enjoying football and cheering on the teams we love, we should also keep in mind that a school’s worth is not a reflection of its football team. A school is first and foremost a place for learning, discovery, and success, and we should be celebrating students’ academic achievements, and not just what they can do on a field.
