Why We Need to Stop Finding Validation on Social Media

We all know the feeling… We open Instagram or Facebook and see picture perfect people with picture perfect lives. We see the amazing opportunities, the awesome new toys, the perfect and loving relationship. But, there’s a reason for that. No one wants to show the bad parts of their life so they amp up the good - even if it’s not all true or not as good as they say.

As a society, we’ve formed a view that if a picture or post on social media gets a lot of attention, then we must be popular or special. If an Instagram post gets over 100 likes, admit it… You feel on top of the world. If your Facebook post is shared by a lot of people, your day is made a little better. But what happened to using your skills in the real world, doing them well, and actually conversing about it? There is no “like” button in life.

Because of the good we see on social media, we feel that we are doing something wrong because we don’t add up to what’s on the screen. We think we must be failing because our lives don’t get as much attention as the people we see. No matter how hard we try to portray OUR good, there will always be someone better and there will always be that yearning to be like them.

Think about it… If we really tried hard enough, we all could glamorize the lives we live. But do you really want to show a part of your life that’s untrue, even if it’s “better” looking? You don’t have to show the deepest and darkest details of your life, but it’s not healthy to show a life you really don’t live, either.

It’s easier said than done to not be jealous of what you see on a screen - whether it be a body, food, clothes, vacations, or anything else. But, it’s not worth it to over-glamorize your life if you really don’t live the one you portray.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
