When you have a major that everyone likes to bash on, you hear a lot of things like:
“You’re never going to make any money.”
“You’re never doing homework.”
“You don’t even know what it’s like to be stressed, do you?”
These are probably some of the most irritating and incorrect statements ever, but they are constantly being said. When you have a major that is in the social services, arts, or communication field, you’re always having to listen to people make negative comments about your major. Really, any major that isn’t a business major has to listen to these comments. Well, guess what? Just because my major consists of helping people rather than taking their money, doesn’t mean it’s not important.
I am in no way bashing business majors. I give you total props for all the work you do. But I give myself props too! Even though my major is in a social service field, does not mean that I don’t put in work. I write papers, give presentations, and study just as hard as anyone else does. You don’t see me doing any homework? Maybe that’s just because I like to get my assignments done early and get ahead. You think I don’t get stressed? I take extra classes plus field hours plus work plus homework and papers. Believe me, I get stressed.
And stop telling me I won’t make any money. As communication major, I can make $70,000 a year being a Public Relations Manager (Business Insider). As a social work maker, I can make just about the same doing clinical work and it only increases with experience (TherapistSchools.com). If I am in the social service field, will I likely be bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars a year? No. But am I going to be able to live comfortably and love going to my job every day? Absolutely. Money isn’t the reason people get into these kinds of fields. People choose these majors because they want to do something meaningful with their lives; they want to be able to wake up every day loving what they do and who they do it for.
So the next time you want to bash my major and tell me it’s not hard work, I’m going to tell you that you’re wrong. It's college. Everyone has hard classes, everyone has a lot of homework, and everyone is stressed. So you worry about your own degree and I’ll continue to strive for mine. And please remember us “little people” one day when you need a therapist to help you get over all of that negativity and greediness you hold on to.
