There's one thing we all want: success. Being successful is something that people crave, and more people's "end goals" or "life plans." However, what does it mean to be successful? The word carries so much weight; it determines so much of our lives.
In my personal opinion, I don't think you can define success. Actually, I don't think you should even try. To be successful is "to each their own." Success should be something that we all define individually and personally. There's no numerical or monetary value, and I think we as a society need to start realizing that.
I really don't intend to write this article to preach. However, as a college student, I often hear people say they want to be "successful" in life. It took me a while to realize just the implications that society puts on this word. Too many people... this means making "six figures," or achieving wealth.
How many people have stopped to think how stupid it is to equate success to a monetary value? Quite simply, some people don't desire the careers that tend to acquire wealth Some people pick jobs they truly love, but many people would not consider having made a "successful" career choice based on their salary. Hell, who's to even say you need a career to be successful in life?
In the end, I want to encourage everyone to define their own success. For me personally, that's meant pursuing my major even though there's not always job security or a "six figure" salary. I want to encourage everyone to pursue what they want to do and to realize in doing that they are successful. We each have our own "mountains" in life to conquer. Do this. For yourself.
Success does not have one definition, and it is not limited to the opinion of one person... or quite frankly, millions of people. Define your own success.
