Since the beginning of October, there have been thirty-four men have been accused of sexual assault, the most recent being NBC's Matt Lauer. As these accusations hit the presses, I've heard so many people automatically side with the celebrity. They proclaim "he is such a great actor", "I loved him in this film", "he's such a great writer there's no way they did this".
What I have to say about that is, STOP DEFENDING THEM. You have no idea what happens behind closed doors. Stop automatically siding with the actor/director/writer just because you love their work. I get it, Kevin Spacey's films are masterpieces. He's a piece of crap though and I believed it soon as I heard it. Stop trying to silence the victim. I get that it's not easy to think your favorite actor is capable of such a horrible thing but you have to face reality.
A girl I know (I will keep her anonymous) is a huge Ed Westwick fan. Soon as his rape allegations were released, she quickly defended him on Facebook. I was beyond disappointed to see this because of as much as I love "Gossip Girl" and Chuck Bass I believe his victim. You don't know Ed personally, and I'm sure he will be thoroughly investigated.
These men in power took advantage of innocent women. Maybe it was their arrogance that made them think they could get away with whatever they wanted. Maybe they are just scumbags.
Recently, "Girls" actor Lena Dunham was under fire because she publicly defended her friend and writer Murray Miller who was accused of sexual assault. She has since apologized, but it definitely made me think differently of her. I would think a feminist like herself would realize that you should always believe other women. She diminished the victim's story just because she loved her friend and writer's work.
Yes, there have been women who have lied about being sexually assaulted. No, that doesn't mean you should ever question a woman who says she has been. Stop saying they are innocent until proven guilty. The truth is if their story made the presses they most likely have proof.
All workplaces, especially those in television, film, and media need to be a safe work space. Women should not be afraid to come forward about men even if they are in power and you should believe them.
