Stop Saying You Can't Wait, You Can

In this era of oversharing our lives on the Internet, we are constantly comparing our lives to others. We compare how happy we are (or pretend to be for social media), our love lives, our friendships, our achievements, how far we are in life, how much money we have etc.

Amidst all this comparison, we start to say things that degrade the lives we are living.

"I can't wait to get married."

"I can't wait to graduate."

"I can't wait to get out of here."

What we are doing when we say we can't wait for something is saying that all the time we are impatiently waiting for what is next. We are constantly thinking only about tomorrow or next year or 10 years from now.

Putting all of our thoughts and hopes into the future leaves little for the present.

There's nothing wrong with not being married yet. Maybe you need to go through some life events before you're even ready to get married. Maybe you should focus on being financially stable before you worry about finding someone to spend the rest of your life with.

There's nothing wrong with going through the process it takes to earn a degree and graduate. I understand that it is stressful, requires hard work and sometimes, that piece of paper with your degree on it seems to be so far away.

But it's really not.

Four years, two years, eight years, six years, however many years you have to go to school to get the degree you want isn't that much time in the grand scheme of your life. Enjoy your struggle and live in it. Once you're done, you're done.

There's nothing wrong with living somewhere you dislike for longer than you'd like. Surely you could meet more people that you get along with and make the most out of the time you're stuck there. Living somewhere you hate can give you more appreciation for living somewhere you love eventually.

And, if you truly cannot wait any longer and you can't seem to sit back and enjoy the path your life takes you on to get where you want to be, take action. Take an extra class over the summer so you can graduate earlier. Get on dating websites and apps. Start looking into how you can move to somewhere else.

Make things happen if you can't wait for them.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
