You Need To Stop Bashing Other People's Majors

It's time that we stop insulting other's majors and just let people live their life.

One of the greatest things about college is the seemingly endless major options offered; business, biology, engineering, English, history, nursing, pre-law, architecture, computer science, and much, much more. One of the not so great things about college, however, is the fact that some people think it's okay to bash other majors. As a strategic communication major, it seems like I hear this a lot. That my major is "easy" or that "anyone could do it and get all A's" or "pointless." All of the majors hold negative stereotypes; no matter what someones major is, there are negative stereotypes and insults about it. Engineering majors may be called "losers" and "nerds." History or English majors may be told they have "no chance at finding a job." It's time that we stop insulting other's majors and just let people live their life.

College is hard. There's a lot of assignments, there are only a few components that count towards your final grade, and schoolwork is consuming. This is true for ALL majors. There are no "easy" majors out there. Sure, someone in the social sciences or liberal arts may not have to calculate equations, but it doesn't mean their major isn't hard; it just requires different skill sets, such as writing or critical thinking. All the majors are a lot of work in their own ways. Papers and readings can just as time-consuming as math problems. Someone's grade isn't determined by their major's level of easiness; their grade is determined by how hard they work at the class and how well their skills fit the class's needs. Besides, why are we all trying to compete over who has the hardest major? Yes, it's true that some majors are definitely more time-consuming, but that doesn't mean that other majors need to be undermined because of this. Just accept that college takes a lot of time and work for everyone and support each other through it.

People choose to major in things because they are passionate about them. It's not okay to insult someone else's passion and say they won't get a job because of it. Maybe they are planning on going to law school or grad school with that major. Maybe they want to teach the subject. Actually, who cares what they want to do with their major? It's their choice to go to school for it and pay for it. It's none of your business to question and mock their choice. Just like you went through the process of examining your passions, goals, and skills to choose a major, so did somebody else. Consider that the next time you go to talk about how someone is "crazy" for majoring in something that "won't get a job."

Why spend time worrying about other's choices in college when you should spend time worrying about your choices and your future? We are all in college for the same reasons: to further our education and to get a higher paying job. Let's stop making fun of other people's majors and what they are choosing to do with their lives and start focusing on supporting each other and worrying about our own lives.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
