Apart from the astounding royal fashion and the charming love we witnessed last Saturday, May nineteenth, many of us Americans who awoke at 4:00 AM to witness the beautiful wedding across the Atlantic were lucky enough to witness history.
Meghan and Harry’s wedding may prove to be a step forward in the right direction for the British monarchy and how funny that might even begin with the joining of a British royal and an American, the first to marry into the royal family in eighty years.
Meghan Markle defined something on Saturday when her nuptials were broadcast to millions, if not billions, of viewers. She stood on that altar as a mixed woman and a divorcee and with such grace and confidence, showing a new generation of women that royalty is not just one shade or shape. The new Duchess of Sussex is known for being gloriously outspoken politically and for standing up for many causes which I hope many young women can see inspiration in.
A beautiful, strong woman is what many people needed to see on that altar.
I have heard and read many accounts of people saying that this wedding proved to be a step in the right direction for the British monarchy and I have to say, I agree. From where I sit, an ocean away, completely detached, the monarchy appears to be a very stagnant being, not incapable of kindness or charity, but stagnant. Like any great thing, change is a necessary thing to ensure a healthy and thriving future. Especially with how things are playing out in our world, all of us need figures to look to for strength and guidance. This wedding was possibly the beginning of some much-needed change.
Markle has been very open to struggling with her identity as a mixed woman, which is something billions of people can relate to as we all struggle with identity at some point in our lives. In her new position, she has the ability to help many people with certain struggles since she is now a face they can relate to. As a mixed woman myself, it was amazing to see someone resembling me in that position (and let’s be honest, I was quite jealous!).
This wedding was such a special moment in time and I feel lucky to have watched it on my television screen. Maybe one day I might even be lucky enough to stand in those enormous crowds hoping to glimpse the wheel of a carriage riding by. Possibly one day, I might be lucky enough to stand before a historical moment.
Until then, I wish the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex all of the happiness in this world. I cannot wait to see what they accomplish together.
