I remember going into my freshman year of college I was absolutely sure I would find a perfect boyfriend by the end of sophomore year, get engaged at the end of senior year, and get married the summer after. I know that a lot of girls go into college with this exact same thought process. I wish someone had told me what I am going to tell you before I went to college.
First of all, you do not need a boyfriend. You do NOT!
I know in every movie and TV show the main girl is falling over some dude and once they start dating everyone lives happily ever after. Let's remember these shows are not reality! You do not need a guy to be happy. I honestly think it is healthier to be single at least your freshman year of college. You are changing so much whether you know it or not. Learning how to adapt to this new adult life, trying to do well in your classes, and trying to eat lunch in the middle of it all. I think this time should be for you to learn about yourself and grow. You can't do that if you have some dude you met last semester at a party taking up all your time. Obviously, some people can make that work, but I think it is so much easier to not worry about being with a guy at first.
I also do not want any of you ladies to feel the pressure of needing to find a boyfriend.
I definitely felt that pressure due to stereotypes of going to college and finding your lover. This happens, but you don't need to rush it or be worried about it. Whoever the lucky guy is will find you when the time is right. As girls we have the easy way out of this — we just have to wait for the right guy to find and pursue us. So let's wait and work on ourselves. I wasted a lot of time and brain power on thinking I needed a boyfriend and wish I could have some of the time and brain power back.
I know that some relationships can work in college and I wish those people the best, but to the girl that thinks she needs a boyfriend...you don't. Enjoy college, enjoy your time being single. You have the rest of your life to deal with a boy. Take time to have fun and learn about yourself!
